Procedures for Entry

The entrant must submit the following items:

  • A completed Entry Form.
     
  • A 1,000-word essay, written by the entrant, submitted in Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx) format, describing a fundamental advance in an empirical science that would not have been feasible without using an Al-associated technique to augment the standard repertoire of methods in that field. The results should inspire other practitioners in the discipline to likewise take advantage of Al in enabling their future research.
     
  • The essay may include one summary figure or table and may have up to 15 references cited numerically in the text (not included in word count).
     
  • Text generated from AI, machine learning, or similar algorithmic tools cannot be used to generate or edit the submission nor its accompanying figures, images, or graphics, without explicit permission from the Science editors. Furthermore, prior to publication of the winning entries, winners will be required to sign Science’s License to Publish, wherein the entrant must warrant that they have followed this requirement.
     
  • A one-page letter of recommendation from the entrant's postdoctoral adviser, supervisor, or other senior colleague who is familiar with their work.
     
  • A curriculum vitae that includes the following:
    • ​​​​​​Full citations of papers that the entrant has published on the research described in the essay.
    • Academic and professional awards and honors that the entrant has received; and
    • Relevant professional experience.
       
  • Copies of two of the entrant's papers that are most relevant to the essay.
     
  • The Entry Form and additional submission materials must be submitted electronically through our prize management system.

Below is a timeline of the prize selection process. You will be contacted only if there are additonal materials or information needed.

August through December 2024: Compilation of Submissions

January though March 2025: Review and Selection of Award Winner(s)

July 2025: Announcement of Award Winner(s)

October/November 2025: Award Ceremony
